Hooked, Lyme & Sinker

Musings of a person with inner limitations focusing on outlets through creativity.

So this is a translation of a pattern I could only find in Spanish- here is the Video .

This is written in American crochet terms.

It looks like in the video they have either sport weight or DK yarn and a 3mm crochet hook.

I used Patons Astra Yarn  in peony pink ( DK- size 3)  and a 4 mm hook.  My chains did not match up exactly with their sizing.  I suggest, once you understand the pattern, using whatever yarn and hook you want to get the desired look.

For any questions I suggest you watch the video for stitch help.

Here are your finished hat sizes:

  • Newborn/ small baby: 15 cm tall – 32 cm circumference,
  • 3-6 months: 17 cm tall – 36 cm circumference
  • 6 mo – 2 yr: 19 cm tall – 42 cm circum.
  • child: 21 cm tall – 48 cm circum.
  • Teen: 23 cm tall – 52 cm circum.
  • Adult Woman: 25 cm tall – 54 cm circum.

Special Stitches:

I call this the insert 5 times puff (or 5xpf): pull up yarn on hook to appropriate stitch height, YO, insert hook into specified stitch, YO, pull through – 5 total times. 11 loops on hook- then YO and pull through all loops on hook, then ch to close.

Variations of this stitch are used through out the pattern.

4xpf:  pull up yarn on hook to stitch height, YO, insert hook in to specified stitch, YO, pull through – 4 total times, 9 loops on hook- YO and pull through all loops on hook, ch to close

3xpf: pull up yarn on hook to stitch height, YO, insert hook into specified stitch, YO, pull through – 3 total times, 7 loops on hook- YO and pull through all loops on hook, ch to close

2xpf: pull up yarn on hook to stitch height, YO, insert hook into specified stitch, YO, pull through – 2 total times, 5 loops on hook- YO pull through all loops on hook, ch to close

Regular stitches used:

  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • ss: slip stitch
  • FPdc: front post double crochet

This pattern is worked in the round, joining each round.

The number of chains listed in the pattern according to size differences:  NB:48, 3-6mo:56, 6mo-2yr:64, child:72, teen:76, Adult W:84.

I suggest working chains to fit the circumference you need in an even number.

Work your required number of ch, join to first chain with ss (not twisting chain), ch3(counts as first dc), turning the chain to work in the back hump dc around, joining to the top of the ch3 with ss.

or

work Foundation Double Crochet around in the required length for the size you’re making and join.

Rnd 2: ch3, FPdc around first dc, dc in next stitch, *FPdc, dc around* join with ss to top of ch3.

You can continue this for as wide as you want the hat band.  The video recommends stopping here for NB-2y sizing and adding one more round for child- adult sizing.

Rnd 3: 5xpf into the same stitch as join, 5xpf again in same stitch, ch1, sk 2 stc, *5xpf twice in next stitch, ch1, sk 2 stc* around joining to first stitch on the top of the first puff with ss (see video if you have a question on this)

Now on the video I had a hard time telling exactly what they did here.  I skipped 2 stitches, 5xpf twice in the next stitch around.  It is possible that the video says skip 3 stitches and 5xpf around- your decision.  I wrote the directions how I made my hat.

Rnd 4: SS into next st (the space between the 2 puffs), 5xpf twice in this space, ch 1, *5xpf twice into the space between the next 2 puffs, ch 1* around. SS into the first stitch on top of the first puff as before.

Repeat round 4 for required number of rows.

Total number of rounds of 5xpf st ch 1 ( or round 4):

  • NB: rounds 3-7
  • 3-6mo: rounds 3-7
  • 6mo-2yr: rounds 3-8
  • child: rounds 3-9
  • Teen: rounds 3-10
  • AdultW: rounds 3-11

So for my 6mo-2yr size hat I repeated round 4 until I finished round 8.

Once you have finished all your rounds we start working DECREASES.  Here are the rounds of decreases needed per hat size:

  • NB: 5 rounds
  • 3-6mo: 6 rounds
  • 6mo-2yr: 7 rounds
  • child: 7 rounds
  • Teen: 8 rounds
  • Adult W: 9 rounds

First decrease round:  (same for all sizes):  SS into next st (the space between the 2 puffs), 4xpf twice in same stitch, ch 1, *4xpf twice into the space between the next 2 puffs, ch 1* around. SS into the first stitch on top of the first puff as before.

Second decrease round: (same for all sizes) SS into next st (the space between the 2 puffs), 4xpf twice in same stitch, NO CH *4xpf twice into the space between the next 2 puffs* around. SS into the first stitch on top of the first puff.

Decrease changes per size:  repeat second decrease round however many times the size you are making requires.

  • NB: none
  • 3-6mo: 3rd dec rnd
  • child: 3rd dec rnd
  • Teen: dec rnds 3 & 4
  • AdultW: dec rnds 3 – 5

Decrease change 3: SS into next st (the space between the 2 puffs), 3xpf twice in same stitch, NO CH *3xpf twice into the space between the next 2 puffs* around. SS into the first stitch on top of the first puff.

Decrease changes per size:  repeat decrease change 3 however many times the size you are making requires.

  • NB: 3rd decrease round
  • 3-6mo: 4th dec rnd
  • 6mo-2y: dec rnds 4 & 5
  • child: dec rnds 4 & 5
  • Teen: dec rnds 5 & 6
  • Adult W: dec rnds 6 &7

Decrease change 4: SS into next st (the space between the 2 puffs), 2xpf twice in same stitch, NO CH *2xpf twice into the space between the next 2 puffs* around. SS into the first stitch on top of the first puff.

Decrease changes per size:  repeat decrease change 4 however many times the size you are making requires.

  • NB: 4th decrease round
  • 3-6 mo: 5th dec rnd
  • 6mo- 2yr: 6th dec rnd
  • child: 6th dec rnd
  • Teen: 7th dec rnd
  • Adult W: 8th dec rnd

Decrease change 5:  SS into next st (the space between the 2 puffs), 3xpf ONCE in same stitch, NO CH *3xpf ONCE into the space between the next 2 puffs* around. SS into the first stitch on top of the first puff. FASTEN OFF leaving a long tail for sewing.

we are now at around 22 min 30 sec of the video if you have questions about this part.

Attach a yarn needle to your long yarn end and insert in in the space between the puffs of the last round- around.  Pull to bring hat together and then sew together and weave in your ends.

Puff Crab Stitch band:

For the video walk through on this, it starts at around 25 min.

While looking at your hat band, attach your yarn with a SS to the bottom “ch” of a FPdc, work 1 5xpf in the same st, working to the right or counter clockwise- sk 1 st, SS into next st, *work 5xpf into the same st, sk 1 st (to the right) SS in next st* around and SS into the base of the first puff.  FASTEN OFF, weave in your ends

This pattern is not mine (except minor changes I have done) it is from https://www.tejiendoperu.com/.
